Oversized Family & Event Blankets

The large formats: family blankets, event blankets, outdoor cinema and festival sizes. They are bought because a standard blanket runs out of room the moment there are four people and a basket on it, and the people at the edges end up half on the grass.

Scaling up is not just more fabric. A large blanket needs a heavier backing because there is more of it to drag across the ground, seams have to be sealed or lapped rather than simply stitched through the laminate, and the weight has to stay something one person will actually carry — a very heavy blanket does not get brought.

So we quote the backing weight separately at these sizes, and we will tell you where the sensible ceiling is for your use. For a hire fleet or an attraction we would usually go heavier; for a giveaway we would not.

Seams through a laminate are the other thing to watch: every stitch is a hole in the waterproof layer, so on large blankets we lap and seal rather than run a plain seam across the middle.

Is there a size where it stops being practical?

Yes, and it is set by weight rather than by area. Past a certain point one person will not carry it and the blanket stops being brought, which makes it a worse product however large it is. We will tell you where that line falls for the backing you have chosen.

Why do large blankets leak in the middle?

Usually a seam. Every stitch through a laminate is a hole in the waterproof layer, and a plain seam across the middle of a big blanket is a line of them in the wettest, most-sat-on part. Lapping and sealing the seam costs a little more and removes the problem.
