Beach & Sand-Shake Blankets

A beach blanket has a different failure than a picnic blanket, and it is not water. It is sand, which works into an open face and then travels home in the car, the hallway and the washing machine.

Sand release is decided by the face before anything is bonded: a tight, low-pile, smooth-finish face lets dry sand fall off with one shake, while a brushed or looped face traps it in the pile essentially permanently. It is a yarn and finish decision that costs nothing extra and that almost nobody quotes.

The backing is chosen differently too. Beach use means heat, UV and salt rather than ground moisture, so the film is specified for those, and a sand-anchor or weighted corner is worth having anywhere with wind.

We will say plainly when a beach blanket is the wrong buy: on grass, a picnic laminate is better, and a sand-shake face is not the softest thing to sit on.
