Waterproof-Backed Picnic Blankets

This is the format the whole category is built on and the one where the difference between two apparently identical products is entirely hidden underneath.

A genuinely waterproof blanket has a film — usually PU or TPU — bonded to the face as a laminate. Ground water does not come through it, and it does not come through after an hour either. A “water-resistant” blanket usually has a thin PEVA or PVC sheet or a coated woven back, and on properly damp grass it wets through in well under half an hour. Both are photographed on the same sunny lawn.

So we name the backing on the quote: what the film is, whether it is bonded to the face or simply sewn to it around the edge, and what it will actually do on wet ground rather than on a dry floor. A backing sewn on only at the perimeter is not a laminate however good the film is, because the two layers separate and water travels between them.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant here?

Roughly twenty minutes on damp grass. A bonded PU or TPU laminate does not pass ground water at all; a thin PEVA or PVC sheet, or a coated woven, wets through fairly quickly and then the blanket is worse than useless because it holds the water against you. Ask which film it is and whether it is bonded or just sewn on.

Does it matter how the backing is attached?

Enormously. A film laminated to the face behaves as one fabric. A film sewn on only around the perimeter separates in use, water travels between the layers and the blanket bags out. It is easy to check on a sample: pinch the two layers in the middle and see whether they move independently.
